Help us give your pet a voice

Please sign the petition for a national euthanasia reporting and tracking system (NERTS)

📢 To Those in Power — and All Who Love Animals:

This petition arises from personal heartbreak. Like millions of devoted pet guardians, I experienced the devastating loss of a beloved companion—more than a pet, a true member of our family. Tragically, our story is not unique.

Every year, millions of cherished animals—dogs and cats alike—are euthanized across the United States. But the full scope of this crisis remains largely invisible, due to the absence of a national system to report and track animal euthanasia. Without data, we lack understanding. Without understanding, we stall progress.

According to Pew Research:

  • 62% of Americans care for a pet; over 33% have more than one.

  • 97% of pet guardians consider their animals part of the family.

  • 51% say their pets are as much a part of the family as a human member.

And yet, it’s estimated that 1.5 million pets—including 670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats—are euthanized each year (ASPCA). This doesn’t include unreported cases: house pets, strays, wildlife, and more. The true number is far greater—and heartbreakingly, unknown.

🐾 Why This Matters:

A national euthanasia reporting and tracking system would:

  • Reveal the full extent of the issue

  • Drive informed public dialogue

  • Support humane policy reform

  • Prevent unnecessary loss of life

This plea is not only personal—it’s urgent. It’s time to bring transparency to a hidden tragedy. Let’s ensure the lives of our animal companions are honored with visibility, not erased in silence.
